I have huge respect for people expert in their
field who manage to maintain balanced lives. I don't buy into
the myth that programmers must work round the clock like
slaves. I don't think that approach is productive, and it's certainly
not healthy.
That
said, I've worked round the clock on numerous projects to get things
done (i used to do it a lot more, that's how I got nicknamed 24x7, but now I'm north of that certain age and slowing down), but
never because slavery was imposed (er, if you exclude early days of my Wall
Street career, natch), rather I did occasional 24x7 routines because I sensed
an urgency and performed.
Whilst I disagree with
the slavery approach to development i do agree with managing overheads,
also known as keeping the burn rate down. Like most things,
reasonableness is key. I could go on and on about this, perhaps better
to discuss it more over a beer or something if your interested.
Nuff said. Let's talk.
